Watch: Richard Sherman still says CMC for MVP

For over a decade, the AP NFL Most Valuable Player award has gone to quarterbacks. Since running back Adrian Peterson won the title with the Minnesota Vikings in 2012, all the MVP's have played the same position.

This year San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey has put together a campaign worthy of serious consideration for the award.

However, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is the massive betting favorite for the award after lighting up the Dolphins with five passing touchdowns in Week 17.

On "Undisputed," on Monday, former All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman said that he still thinks the award should go to McCaffrey.

"That didn't move the needle for me. It was a fantastic performance for Lamar Jackson at a time his team needed it, you've got to give him all the credit in the world. " Sherman said about Jackson's performance against the Dolphins.

"But the five touchdowns he had are almost as many as he threw in September and November combined (six). So when you look at the full picture I just don't see it."

Sherman makes a compelling argument.

McCaffrey has been the most productive player in the NFL since joining the 49ers last season, with a record-tying 17 straight contests with a touchdown to begin his career in the Bay and leads the league in both scrimmage yards and is tied for the most rushing plus receiving touchdowns.

In his quietest game of the year he still managed to accumulate 52 total yards, including a 27-yard rush and a receiving touchdown against the stout Cleveland defense. He's been as reliable and exciting as anyone else in the league this season -- but not more valuable than Lamar Jackson.

Former NFL quarterback and ESPN NFL analyst Robert Griffin III took to "X," to make his case for Jackson.

"Everyone wanted to tell me its about the stats, but stats are like bikinis. They show you a lot, but not everything," RGIII said. "No player has been more valuable to their team than Lamar Jackson this year."

Things haven't been as consistently brilliant for Lamar this season, but he's led Baltimore to a 12-3 record and the No. 1 seed in the AFC. He's done it even after losing running back J.K. Dobbins in Week 1 to an Achilles tear and tight end Mark Andrews in Week 11 to a cracked fibula and ankle ligament damage.

Since Andrews -- Jackson's established favorite target -- went down, Jackson has thrown 12 touchdowns to just two interceptions while throwing to a receiving corps featuring an aging-Odell Beckham Jr., Rashod Bateman and Isaiah Likely along with rookie star Zay Flowers.

Voters should also remember what happened to Baltimore last season once Jackson got hurt. After starting the year 8-4, the Ravens finished 10-7 and lost to the Bengals in the wild-card round.

Sure, McCaffrey has had a statistically superior season to Jackson. But if CMC gets hurt, the 49ers other skill players, led by Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, are much more capable of filling his void than any backup quarterback in Baltimore.
