Report: Browns may be forced to cut quarterback Baker Mayfield

Once the Cleveland Browns acquired quarterback Deshaun Watson, the writing was on the wall for former starter Baker Mayfield.

While Mayfield has been mentioned in trade rumors since the Browns traded for Watson, there's been little to no movement.

According to CBS Sports' Josina Anderson, the Browns' asking price for Mayfield may be too high for NFL teams searching for a signal-caller, and Cleveland may have no choice but to release the disgruntled quarterback.

"I spoke to a source from a team that expressed interest in Baker Mayfield, had talks, but they cooled not wanting to pay asking price feeling he has to be cut," Anderson tweeted. "Their follow-up comment tonight: 'no one's trying to do the Browns any favors in this situation.'"

Mayfield, 27, is entering the final year of a four-year, $32.6 million contract. He's owed $18.8 million in 2022. A report recently stated that the Browns were unwilling to pay any of Mayfield's salary in a trade.

Mayfield went 6-8 last season for the Browns, completing 60.5 percent of his pass while throwing for 3,010 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.

Over four seasons with the Browns, Mayfield has gone 29-30 with a 61.6 completion percentage, 92 touchdowns, and 56 interceptions in 59 starts.
