Ravens show interest in adding veteran DE with latest visit

The Ravens are in search of another piece for their defensive line, and it might just come in the form of a six-year veteran.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Baltimore is hosting DE Dawuane Smoot on a visit early next week.

"Smoot tore his Achilles late last season, but is doing well in his rehab and prepping to get back on the field," Rapoport adds.

The former third-round pick from the 2017 NFL Draft has been a dependable player, posting at least five sacks in four straight seasons. He has spent his entire career with the Jaguars thus far but is searching for a new home.

The Ravens have a track record of adding a veteran pass-rusher late in the summer, signing Justin Houston in July and August the last two offseasons. However, the 28-year-old would be a much younger option instead of re-signing 34-year-old Houston again.

Smoot would also serve as a good insurance policy. Baltimore's 2022 second-round pick David Ojabo, who tore his Achilles during his rookie year, and Tyus Bowser missed significant time due to injuries in 2022.

The Ravens have had a recent history of being hit with the injury bug, so Smoot could fill in for any injured or underperforming player on the defensive line.

Baltimore signed Houston to a one-year, $3.5M contract last offseason. The team would likely be able to acquire Smoot on a similar deal. With almost $10M in cap space, money is not an issue either.
