Packers sign OLB Preston Smith to four-year contract extension

The Green Bay Packers have signed outside linebacker Preston Smith to a four-year contract extension worth $52.5 million, multiple sources confirmed on Monday morning.

Smith, who just wrapped up his third season in Green Bay, announced the signing with a post on Instagram.

The pass-rusher will make $25 million over the next two seasons and has the opportunity to make $31 million with incentives, ESPN explained.

The seven-season veteran out of Mississippi State has amassed 49.5 sacks over his career.

Smith's new deal is also one of the many ways the Packers are trying to create more room under the salary cap with free agency opening up. Green Bay still has work to do, including bridging the cap in contract talks with star wideout Davante Adams. Adams on Monday informed the team he will not play under the franchise tag and the sides are reportedly "nowhere close" to agreeing on a deal.
