New York Jets’ Coach Reveals Plan For Key Offensive Playmaker

The New York Jets selected two running backs in the NFL Draft last week, which has some wondering about what the plan will be for the backfield next season.

Will Breece Hall remain the featured back? Or will his touches be limited with the influx of new talent?

Jets head coach Robert Saleh set the record straight on Friday, saying that Hall is still the primary guy in New York’s running back room.

“I don’t know if [a] committee is the right word, but you can only give these guys the ball so much, even the bell-cows,” Saleh said, via the Jets’ official YouTube account. “[They] get 20 to 25 touches. It’s not 30-plus like it used to be. But Breece is the unquestioned bell-cow but even then you’re still talking 20 to 25 touches.”

So, basically, Hall will still be Gang Green’s clear No. 1 back.

The Jets selected Wisconsin’s Braelon Allen in the fourth round and South Dakota State’s Isaiah Davis in the fifth round, which puzzled some people.

However, when you look at what New York has behind Hall on the depth chart, it’s not hard to understand why it doubled down on halfbacks.

Prior to the draft, Israel Abanikanda was the Jets’ No. 2 back, and in 2023, he carried the ball 22 times for a grand total of 70 yards. It would have been hard to feel comfortable with that if you were New York.

It should also be noted that Hall has a torn ACL in his rearview mirror, so the Jets probably want as much insurance at the position as possible.

Plus, it’s not like New York took Allen and Davis early on in the draft. Both players were Day 3 picks.

Hall is coming off of an impressive season in which he racked up 994 yards and five touchdowns while averaging 4.5 yards per carry. He also hauled in 75 receptions, 591 yards and four scores.

We’ll see if he can hit the 1,000-yard mark in 2024.
