Lions' D'Andre Swift on track to start without limitations vs. 49ers

Detroit Lions starting running back and 2020 rookie D'Andre Swift was slowed by a groin issue throughout training camp and the preseason, and there was talk earlier in the week that free-agent acquisition Jamaal Williams could be Detroit's RB1 for Sunday's regular-season opener against the San Francisco 49ers at Ford Field.

According to Eric Woodyard of ESPN, however, Swift was a full participant in practice on Wednesday and Thursday and shouldn't be limited in the backfield this weekend. Additionally, Lions running backs coach Duce Staley explained that Swift won't be on any type of "reps count" barring a setback.

Swift, 22, tallied 521 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 114 carries and added 46 receptions for 357 receiving yards and a pair of scores last season. Williams has also proven himself to be a capable pass-catching weapon, though, as he recorded 122 receptions for 961 yards and eight touchdowns during his four years with the Green Bay Packers.

If Swift looks hampered at any point against San Francisco, the Lions could quickly turn to Williams as a potential lead ball-carrier if only for one afternoon.
