Jets WR Jamison Crowder out of season opener after testing positive for COVID-19

New York Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson will make his NFL debut Sunday without one of his top receivers.

Slot receiver Jamison Crowder, who tested positive for COVID-19 last week, has been ruled out for Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

The Jets are left with five healthy wide receivers for the weekend, including Corey Davis, Elijah Moore, Braxton Berrios, Denzel Mims and Jeff Smith.

Crowder was initially eligible to play in the opener because he is vaccinated. However, he needed two negative tests 24 hours apart after being asymptomatic for 48 hours. He obviously did not meet that requirement.

Crowder, the team's leading receiver in 2019 and 2020, caught 59 passes for 699 yards and six touchdowns in 12 games last season.

The 28-year-old is entering the final season of a three-year, $28.5 million deal with the Jets and will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2021 campaign.

The Jets have not made the playoffs since 2010 and aren't projected to make a postseason appearance this year. If Crowder misses more than just Week 1, it'll be a long season for New York.
