Giants HC Brian Daboll on Kayvon Thibodeaux block: 'That’s part of the game'

Probably the most controversial moment from the second week of the ongoing NFL preseason occurred in Sunday night's game between the New York Giants and Cincinnati Bengals when Bengals tight end Thaddeus Moss delivered a low but legal "cut block" to Giants rookie pass-rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, the fifth overall selection from this year's draft:

"We’ll that’s the rules," Daboll said of the block while speaking with reporters shortly after Sunday's game that the Giants won 25-22, per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. "If they allow it. ... We do it as well with tight ends and full backs going back to the line of scrimmage. So, (you’ve) got to do a good job of playing it. It’s a tough block. But whatever the rules are, those are the rules."

Daboll made those comments a day before he confirmed that Thibodeaux went down with a sprained MCL that could keep him out for roughly three-to-four weeks. The good news is that Thibodeaux's ACL is intact.

"Yeah those are tough blocks, the blocks that are coming from across the line of scrimmage within the tackle box," Daboll explained when asked Monday about the blow that has sparked debates throughout the NFL community. "You’ve got to see it, and then you’ve got to do a great job of trying to play it with your hands. It’s unfortunate that KT went down, but that’s part of the game."

Williams noted in a different piece that Daboll would only say he views Thibodeaux as "day-to-day" ahead of this coming Sunday's preseason finale versus the New York Jets. The Giants begin the regular season at the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 11, and it's obviously too early to know if Thibodeaux will be available for that matchup.

"I’m not forecasting when a player can come back or not come back," Daboll added about Thibodeaux. "I know he’ll come in and get treatment. We’ll take it day by day and when he’s ready to go out there, that’s when we’ll put him out there."

Thibodeaux recorded 19 sacks in 30 college games while with the Oregon Ducks and is on track to be a full-time starter whenever he is cleared to play.
