The Cleveland Browns agreed to a deal with a former number-one pick as they look to boost their offensive roster for the 2024 season. The Browns were fortunate to find a solid backup quarterback in Joe Flacco in free agency following Deshaun Watson’s midseason shoulder injury.
Flacco and the Browns had a mutual interest in a potential 2024 return after the veteran quarterback won the AP’s Comeback Player of the Year Award in February. However, the breaking news out of Cleveland on Tuesday morning casts a serious down on Flacco’s potential return for the upcoming season.
Per Ari Meirov with the 33rd Team, the Browns are set to sign former Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2015 No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston on a one-year deal.
The #Browns are signing QB Jameis Winston and he is now set to be the backup to Deshaun Watson. It’s a 1-year deal, per @Schultz_Report.
That should also mean that Comeback Player of the Year QB Joe Flacco is unlikely to be back in Cleveland at this point and time. pic.twitter.com/U8z28DtaCu

Winston said early this offseason he wanted a chance to start for a Super Bowl contender. He could get his wish with the Browns. Watson is still healing from his injury in the 2023 season. Watson could also face another suspension from the league related to the case for which he had already served a suspension.
Winston has thrown for 22,104 yards, 141 touchdowns, and 99 interceptions in his nine-year NFL career.
