Buccaneers' Todd Bowles Reveals Update on Mike Evans Ahead of NFL Combine
USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a lot to figure out as we approach the free agency period ahead of the 2024 NFL season. They made a move this morning, announcing the release of veteran OLB Shaquil Barrett, but other ends need to be tied up as they will look to retain key free agents in WR Mike Evans and QB Baker Mayfield.

On Tuesday morning, Bucs' head coach Todd Bowles joined Good Morning Football to discuss a number of topics including the upcoming free agency/contract talks with veteran standout wideout Mike Evans as they have hopes of re-signing the Super Bowl-winning WR.

"He had a career year last year. Obviously, he had a heck of a year and he’s been doing it for a decade now and obviously, we want him to retire as a Buc. And everything we’re trying to do put all our resources [into] trying to sign him back as well. Mike is great for the community, he’s great for the team, he’s great for the guys and he’s a heck of a ball player.”

There is a reason why Mike Evans is one of the top priorities of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has been the most consistent WR in the NFL since coming into the league 10 seasons ago - notching 1,000 receiving yards in each season, quickly approaching records held by Jerry Rice. Evans has also quietly been one of the best at incorporating himself into the Tampa community.

There aren't many players around the league that possess what Evans does, both on and off the field, so retaining him should absolutely be at the forefront of what the Bucs plan to accomplish this offseason. He is getting older, but he has proven that he has only gotten better with age and will continue to take care of his body to set himself up for even further success.

Evans has wanted to get a deal done at multiple points throughout 2023, but that never came to fruition. Hopefully, with the Buccaneers freeing up some cap space they will be able to get a deal done that fits both sides' needs and wants.
