Browns Provide Positive Update on Veteran WR Amid Life-Threatening Injury
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Marquise Goodwin got a second lease on his NFL career this summer when the veteran wide receiver signed a contract with the Cleveland Browns. Little did he know, however, that he would face one of the toughest challenges not only of his career but his life as well even before playing a single minute for his new squad.

Marquise Goodwin Diagnosed With Blood Clots

Last July, the Browns placed Goodwin on the non-football illness list after a check-up revealed blood clots in his legs and lungs. This is a potentially life-threatening condition, which is why it was good that team doctors were able to diagnose it early on. No firm timetable was placed on his potential return to the field, and at that point, the bigger concern was making sure that the 32-year-old was going to pull through from the condition.

Goodwin himself spoke about the issue, which he admitted gave him a proper scare:

It was really alarming at first because I’ve experienced injury throughout my career, but it’s never been anything like this that could turn into something detrimental if it’s not taken care of,” Goodwin said in July, via Anthony Poisal of the team’s official website. “It was frightening at first, but now I’m at ease with it. I’ve prayed and just given it over to God. It’s out of my control, and the only thing I can control is my effort and attitude and how I approach each day moving forward.”

Marquis Goodwin Cleared to Return

On Sunday, the Browns announced that Goodwin had taken a significant step in his road to recovery. The former Texas standout was removed from the non-football injury list after being cleared by the team’s medical staff to return.

To be clear, however, this does not mean that Goodwin will be ready for Week 1. There’s a possibility that he will be available for the Brown’s season-opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 10, but it also won’t be a surprise if team doctors decide to hold him out a bit longer.

Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski spoke out about Goodwin’s imminent return as the incoming fourth-year shot-caller talked up Goodwin’s attitude amid his current injury spell:

“Marquise is great news for us,” Stefanski said, via Doc Louallen of the team’s website. “He’s been involved in everything, including the meeting room, on the practice field, and during those games. He’s such a supportive teammate, so to have him progressing to where he can start to get ready for the season, I think, is outstanding.”
