Two sides wanting different things

Who would have guessed that by 2022, Heinz Field would no longer be known as the Steelers’ home? Instead, it will be known as Acrisure Field. That is one difference Steelers supporters will notice when they make their way to the stadium this season. Another difference is that #7 will not be starting this season. Recently, Ben Roethlisberger told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that former general manager Kevin Colbert wanted him to retire before the 2021 season.

“It was mostly Kevin,” Roethlisberger told Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, explaining management’s preference to say farewell. “I think (coach) Mike (Tomlin) was a little ready to move on, but I think he was OK with me coming back. I think Mr. (Art) Rooney really wanted me to come back last year to play.”

Before retiring from his role as general manager for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Kevin Colbert had his fingerprints on the 2022 NFL Draft. The Steelers drafted Kenny Pickett with the 20 th pick in the 2022 draft, being the only quarterback taken in the first round. When discussing about his play last season, Roethlisberger had this to say.

“I thought I went out on my terms,” Roethlisberger added. “I never wanted to stay too long. I know some people might think I did. But I thought I played pretty well last year, to be honest. My arm feels like I still could go out and play. I’m pretty confident I could still play. But it’s every day. It’s mental. Not having to prepare for camp and the season has been the biggest blessing for me. I’m fine with where I’m at with everything.”

Ben Roethlisberger and his relationships with current Steelers quarterbacks

Also, in the quarterback room besides Kenny Pickett is Mitchell Trubisky, who was drafted by the Bears second overall in the first round in 2017. He had a brief stint being Bills backup to Josh Allen, but he’ll get a chance to compete this season for the starting role. Many are believing Trubisky will be given the starting role. He’s talked with both quarterbacks and has told them to be themselves when being a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Without Ben Roethlisberger in the lineup, the Steelers will begin training camp for the first time in 18 years on Tuesday.
