AFC juggernaut throws wrench into potential Dallas Cowboys' Zay Jones signing

The Dallas Cowboys were seemingly gaining momentum toward signing wide receiver Zay Jones in free agency on Wednesday.

Hours after Jones' visit was reported, the Cowboys released WR Martavis Bryant, which many interpreted as a sign the team was opening up a spot on the WR room for a veteran.

However, Jones has since continued his free agency tour, headed to visit the Kansas City Chiefs after being in Dallas, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

It was known from the start that the Cowboys weren't the only team interested in adding Jones, as the Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals were already reported to be in the mix.

But leaving Dallas without a deal tends to be a bad sign for a conservative Cowboys front office when looking at recent history. Additionally, assuming every team he's visiting is legitimately interested, the Cowboys tend to steer clear from bidding wars as they hate overpaying for free agents.

That's without even getting into the fact that Jones' path to be a starter appears much clearer with the Chiefs, Titans, and Cardinals, while in Dallas he'd need to beat Jalen Tolbert, who the Cowboys appear to really like ahead of the 2024 NFL season.

For now, all that there's left to do is wait. The Cowboys adding Jones would be a no-brainer assuming the price tag isn't crazy, as he'd be a solid insurance policy in case of injuries or in case of Tolbert failing to take the next step, with the upside of him straight up competing for the WR3 spot in 2024.
