The Texas Rangers suffered a devastating loss on Friday night to the Los Angeles Angels. The Rangers led 4-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning and ended up losing in the tenth inning.
With the loss, the Rangers fell to 18-13 on the season and are now tied with the Angels for first place in the American League West.
While pitcher Will Smith got the loss on the mound, pitcher Josh Sborz joined a weird club in baseball history.
Per @OptaSTATS on Twitter:
"Tonight Josh Sborz became the first MLB pitcher to have his only pitch of the game be a walkoff wild pitch since the Pirates' Brad Clontz did so at Shea Stadium on October 3, 1999. His wild pitch helped the Mets force a one-game playoff with the Reds the next day, which they won."
That's certainly a tough club to be a part of, but Sborz has had a productive season to this point for Texas. He's 0-1 with a 3.72 ERA and has struck out 12 batters in 9.2 innings. He has a 1.03 WHIP.
The 74th overall pick in the 2015 draft by the Dodgers out of the University of Virginia, he's appeared in 100 career games and has a 4.74 ERA.
Sborz debuted in 2019 with the Dodgers and appeared in four games in the 2020 season as the Dodgers won the World Series.
The Rangers and the Angels will play again tonight at 9:07 p.m. ET as Nathan Eovaldi pitches against Reid Detmers.
