What Does the Auburn Football Quarterback Room Look Like Without Robby Ashford?

Robby Ashford has entered the transfer portal.

Ashford's departure marks the first quarterback from Auburn's room to leave this offseason. The room as a whole hasn't seen much movement this offseason until now but with true freshman Walker White coming in, the Tigers more than likely wanted to keep their quarterback scholarship number at four. With Ashford leaving, it will look to stay that way unless Auburn makes an unforeseen move via the transfer portal.

Here's a look at Auburn's current quarterback room heading into 2024 following Ashford's transfer.

Payton Thorne

After three seasons at Michigan State, Thorne transferred to Auburn this past offseason and earned the starting job during fall camp.

He started all 12 games for the Tigers during the regular season, completing a career-best 62.6% of his passes for 1,671 yards, 15 passing touchdowns and nine interceptions. Thorne also added 520 rushing yards and three rushing scores.

As of right now, he's the projected starting quarterback for 2024 unless the Tigers pick up another QB in the transfer portal.

Holden Geriner

Geriner was a four-star prospect in the 2022 recruiting class. He completed four of nine passes in garbage time this season for 67 yards, no touchdowns or interceptions.

Hugh Freeze has raved a different points this year about Geriner's abilities in practice but has yet to let Holden see the field in any meaningful capacity. Heading into his third season on the Plains, now with high-profile freshman in Walker White stepping in to battle for the backup QB role, it is possible that Geriner chooses to enter the transfer portal to get a better shot at playing time elsewhere.

Walker White

Walker White has been deemed by many as Auburn's quarterback of the future.

White is the No. 150 player nationally, the No. 11 quarterback and the No. 3 player in the state of Arkansas in the class of 2024. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound signal caller has some serious strength behind both his throws and runs. 247Sports describes White as "one of the more unique signal callers to come out of the high school ranks in recent years given his size and spray chart."

He posted a 10-3 record as a senior, leading Little Rock Christian Academy to the Arkansas 6A title game. In the regular season, White completed 148-of-243 passes for 2,282 yards, 29 touchdowns against eight interceptions. White also ran for 346 yards and nine scores.

Hank Brown

Brown, a three-star prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, will be a redshirt sophomore in 2024 and could be a part of the two-deep depending on how this position room unfolds this offseason.

Freeze likes Brown's game and in some talks with some players, Brown has impressed some of the older guys when he ran the scout team this season.
